Over the past couple of years or
so I have gone on aol message boards and other blogs and seen thousand and
thousands of people have the same opinion as me that see how
bad alcohol is for your body and society.  Here are just a
couple hundred or so of these opinions.

Who will lead fight against alcohol?

Kudos to Richard Cohen for his column Friday, "One
            drink too many."
It's about time somebody highlighted this
problem. Alcohol is as much a drug as pharmaceuticals and tobacco.

Now, who will lead us in going after the alcoholic-beverage
industry the way we went after the tobacco cartel? Or is that off
            limits? - Kent S. Larsen,

            New Years' Resolutions Can Be
            Beneficial
  By Thomas Keyes Feb. 27,
            2005
I know it may seem childish to make New Years?
resolutions, as if there were something magical about that day,
when, if we used a different calendar, what we call New Year?s
Day would just be another prosaic, quotidian day.
  So far
I?ve kept my New Years? resolutions not only for year 2006, but
also those I made in 1983 and 1987, both of which have been
exceedingly beneficial, however artificial the routine and
            ritual of resolving.
In 1983, I resolved to stop drinking
alcoholic beverages of all kinds, and to this day I have lived
up to it. Previously, I had made the same resolution several
times, but each time, I did it with the intention of staying
sober only until the holidays. So I would refrain from liquor
from January 1 till Thanksgiving, and complimenting myself on my
resolve, I would drink from Thanksgiving till January 1 of the
following year. But this was not enough. Causing myself much
shame because of some of the foolish things I did when I was
drunk, and even getting into legal difficulties, whose nature
I?d just as soon not mention, I eventually realized that
absolute abstention was the only way for me. So in 1983 I made
an unconditional resolution: not a drop of liquor, wine or beer
ever again. No longer was it a matter of staying sober for 11
months out of 12; it was for good. And so far I?ve been lucky
enough not to slip in these 23 years. I would not say that I am
resisting temptation any longer though, for rarely does the thought
             even cross my mind nowadays.
  Last August, I started doing
regular exercises, which is something that I?ve been very
neglectful about over the years, particularly since I did lots
of walking and bicycling, which I figured was enough. Now,
instead, since my walking and cycling have become minimal, I do
a variety of exercises that require about an hour and fifteen
minutes a day, but I am always just a little disinclined to get
going. Another matter is that I haven?t witnessed a tremendous
amount of improvement. But I want to try it throughout the year
before I judge on whether it is worth the trouble. So that was
my resolution this year. So far so good. Since I actually
started in August, I have 6 months in already. One thing is
certain, and that is that exercise won't do me any
            harm.

Attack drinking Jerome C. Malon Published

Chicago -- Now that we have
restricted smoking, it's time to attack alcohol. Because
individuals drink too much, they can cause death and injuries to
innocent people, and have a number of related sickness problems
that cost taxpayers and insurance companies millions of dollars,
will local governments address this problem and ban alcohol
             next?

The new legislation that is due to
begin  next year (I think), is to protect those people who
undoubtedly would have their  health damaged by passively
             smoking other peoples tobacco products.<
  I  don't
have a problem with that..just that there are many more things
should be  done safeguarding the air we breathe (other than
blaming smokers) and things in  general done to those
through no fault of their own but by others "wee pleasures
in life" KWIM? Like stricter laws on factory and car emissions
etc...a no  dumping whatsoever policy of harmful chemicals
into our waters etc..a total ban  on any alcohol in your
system and none of this one or two drinks crap is OK  ...ah
well..am off to book a flight to Utopia..anyone coming
            along?  LOL

They are  saying they don't know if
marijuana is a safe drug to use...hello...does that  mean
we should make voixx, bextra and phen phen illegal drugs to

people abusing their Oxycotton  prescriptions...should we
make that illegal too.  If the government could   find
a way to make more money off of selling marijuana then they could
off of   preventing it this wouldn't be an issue.
There is more alcohol related   deaths in a America than
marijuana but alcohol is still legal..and at one point
alcohol was prohibited....what made it safe all of a
sudden....nothing....the   government found a way to make
money of it by taxing it and taking political
contributions from the breweries.  Let's not even go into
the cigarettes  that kill people everyday...willl they ban

the Federal Government should not worry so much on how we

For those of us who went to college (and actually did some
studying), we learned that there has never once been a death
related  to the use of marijuana alone.  We also
learned, that two of  the three most dangerous drugs to the
human body are alcohol and  nicotine.  Where does
marijuana stand on that list?   It is  pretty close to
the bottom. Our society has let itself become ignorant,
and  judgemental.  Why do we condone and accept
alcohol and  nicotine as a "lifestyle", something cool and
glamorous?  Why  does our society continue to fall for
this insane propaganda?    The answer is two
fold....money and big corporations. Open your eyes people.
If we want to ban the use of  marijuana, then should we not
take the next step and ban the use of  alcohol and
nicotine?  Many of you are mislead, and therefore
assume mislead opinions.      No, I am not
saying that we should aslo condone the use of other  drugs that
are medically proven to cause permanent, and long term
damage to our bodies (heroin, cocaine, LSD).  What I am
saying  is our society needs to wake up, and educate itself
with the facts,  not what our "trustworty" government and
media tell us. If we are to classify those who smoke
marijuana as loosers,  should we not put those who drink
and smoke cigaretes into the same  category?  Why do we
classify those who smoke marijuana as  criminals, when we
classify alcoholics as people who have a
disease?    Shame on the government!  Shame on
those of you who judge  others, and have no idea what you
are talking about!  Shame on  you for not thinking for
             yourself!    Wake up people!

  Don't believe it
for a second. Our  government has been profitting off drug
trafficking  longer than I've been alive. It's big

inception. Sad  our politicians can see fit to allow
alcohol (which has  no medicinal properties) and would deny
someone   terminally ill the right to comfort. A great many
of our  drugs have a plant base but marijuana has been
singled  out. It has been taboo. Is it because it might
drive the  street value down and attack profits if a ban

Having already been banned from restarants,
public buildings, and even  some entire
cities (Check out Boulder, Colorado's recent bans), and some
companies requiring their employees to be
smoke free even away from work,  additional legislation not only seems pointless, but
spiteful.  What  strikes me as incongrous is that these same establishments and
            cities  welcome tobacco products for
the sales they represent.  Know of any  cities where the
sale of cigarettes is banned?  Seen any
business  licenses for smoke shops denied lately? I strongly doubt it. If
they are so concerned about our health and  the health of
others, why don't they target alcohol?
Many more  people die every year at the hands of drunk drivers, intoxicated brawlers,  and others
who can't or won't control their habit.  I know of no bans  of alcohol
in any hotels or motels.  I haven't heard of any employers  including mandatory
testing for any residual alcohol as a condition  for employment.  And talk
about costs!  Any idea how much a  month long alcoholism treatment program, that will
likely fail,  costs?  Compared to tobacco, alcohol prohibition should be
            supported and immediately instituted WORLD
            WIDE. The reason for the
difference?   Simple, many more politicians drink today
than smoke.  Many  more of their
constituents do also.  In other words, smokers are a  persecuted minority.  (The only
minority actively persecuted by and   with the full support of all levels of
government)  It is time to lay  off. On a historical  note, the government used
to encourage citizens to take up the
habit.  Oftentimes, this was subtle.  I distinctly
remember, for  example, when I was in
boot camp the drill instructor calling out "Light  em, if you
got em" as a way to begin a break.
Those who didn't smoke  continued with whatever was assigned, without break.
True, this was  over 30 years ago. It stills grandly illustrates one method the feds
used  to promote tobacco use.  The Surgeon General at one point supported  the
use of chew as an alternative to smoking.  Anything to  keep the tax
            dollars rolling in.

pay  more for any kind of insurance,
and are made to feel like they are  scum.  Now you want to
ban smoking in cars??  When was
the  last time you heard of someone getting killed because they just had  too much to smoke? What
about alcohol??  The last time I heard  of an accident about someone getting killed because
someone had too  much to drink
was...well...TODAY!  You can't stop the drunks  from
drinking and driving so why not go to the
smokers, especially  since we pay 3 times as much tax on our cigarettes as the people who  buy
alcohol.  Come on people!  If we are really concerned  about public safety, lets
put a ban on advertising any alcoholic drink, and tax them out the ass.   Subject: Re: Bill

smoking in their car, so why haven't   drinkers of alcoholic beverages been banned from
            public  restaurants, sporting  events,
and other places where  children are present?  Why isn't
another tax placed  on alcohol when

            OK  enough is enough.   Why
are they not doing the same thing with  alcohol. I know it's not legal to drink and  drive,
however alcohol is used more than cigarettes.  Alcohol kills others on
the  road, destroys families, and yet there are not  special taxes on it nor it
restricted to where it  can be consumed.  Guess that more government

Agree with you. I often think that if
alcohol was only just being introduced now,
the  government would have to ban it in order to have a
            consistent approach.  It's also amazing
how many  people look down on drug-users but are quite happy to go  out themselves with the
express intention of getting  hammered. Ask them what the difference is and they
are hard-pressed to tell you.   Personally   I've never done drugs and
of alcohol, but I do see  the side-effects, and so I tend to view both in
a  similarly negative way.  The crime and damage from  alcohol tends to be more
directly felt, but there are  also a lot of drugs-related crimes.

  However,  if by
'experienced' you mean 'experienced the effects  of' then I'd
             agree.  I've experienced the
effects  of drug use when I've been negatively affected by the  behaviour of people off
their heads.  I know people  who have become increasingly paranoid from drug use,
and  I 've seen the effects on their
friends and  families.  I've had stuff stolen from me by
drug  users. In my opinion that
qualifies me as much as anyone  else to say what I think.

But so does Alcohol.  But ITS ALL

            For
those of us who went to college (and actually did  some
studying), we learned that there has never
once  been a death related to the use of marijuana   alone.  We also learned, that two of the
three most  dangerous drugs to the human body are alcohol and  nicotine.
Where does marijuana stand on that  list? It is pretty close to the bottom. Our society has let itself become ignorant,
and  judgemental.  Why do we condone and accept  alcohol and nicotine as
a "lifestyle", something cool  and glamorous?  Why does our society continue
to  fall for this insane propaganda?   The answer is two  fold....money and big
            corporations. Open your eyes people.
If we want to ban the  use of marijuana, then should we not take the next step  and ban the use
of alcohol and nicotine?  Many of   you are mislead, and therefore assume
mislead  opinions.      No, I am not saying that we should aslo condone
the  use of other drugs that are
medically proven to cause  permanent, and long term damage to
            our bodies (heroin,  cocaine,
LSD).  What I am saying is our society  needs to wake up,
and educate itself with the facts, not
what our "trustworty" government and media
tell us. If we are to classify those who
smoke marijuana as  loosers, should we not put those who drink and smoke  cigaretes
into the same category?  Why do we   classify those who smoke marijuana as criminals,
when we  classify alcoholics as people
            who have a disease?     Shame
on the government!  Shame on those of you  who judge
others, and have no idea what you are

Of course, but I don't exactly see the
government making any attempts to ban alcohol again.
  You know what's weird?
The same thing people did  with alcohol when it was banned at one point people are  doing it
with pot (smoking it as though it's legal
--  and you'd be surprised how many people smoke it). And
that's how come alcohol was made legal
again -- too many  people were being arrested for it.
  I think the  only
reason it isn't working with pot is because our  government has become more money hungry (they make
money  off of busting people with pot)

  I was reading the link
for the 411 on steriod  use from the webMD and this is why I think there  are more things to
worry about than steriod use.  These are the side effects listed: Men who take anabolic steriods may: * Develop breasts   (the users
            problem) * Get painful erections
(again the users  problem) * Have
their testicels shrink (their problem again) * Have decreased sperm count (also their
problem) * Become infertile or impotent
(are we seeing a patern  yet?) Both
men and women may: * Get acne * Have oily scalp and skin * Get yellowing of the skin * Become bald So Far I
Do Not See Any  Real Dangers! Now a
little more serious  things but I still have questions: * Have heart attacks  (ok. good reason,
but a bad diet  also causes this.  I do not see anyone  outlawing unhealthy
food!) * Develope significant risk of liver
disease  and liver cancer (ok. alcohol
also  causes this, but where is the ban on  alcohol) * Have high levels of "bad " cholesterol. (Again, unhealthy  foods cause this but we
still have fast food  resturaunts on
ever corner in the  country. ) * Have
mood swings, fly into rages, suffer  delusions (Again,   alcohol also causes all
these things, yet  alcohol is still very much ok.) I
guess  I am just  curious about the REAL reason people are
so  against steriods when there are
many legal  things out there that are just as bad if not
worse out there??!!! I guess I just think that grown ups who
are  educated on the side of effects of steriods  should be able to make their
own decisions about  it.  There far more serious issues to worry  about than
            this!

In my state alone last year, there

I couldn't agree more. Just recently
there  have been several incident of pilots being DWI  while flying. Alcohol
kills or is  responsible for far more deaths and illnesses  than smoking. In
addition, there are numerous  incidences of drunken passengers creating
            disturbances on planes.   In addition
to the NO Smoking Ban add a NO  Alchoholic Drink ban. Of course
No Alchohol  would mean a revenue loss
for the airline so  that is probably why this issue is not  pursued. For the
record, I am a smoker and  been known to imbibe, so have no axe to  grind. I totally agree with the notion of pre
flight testing of pilots et all for drugs
and  alcohol. It's about time the"
powers that  be"  cease regimenting the American
            public  and start legislating
their  monied constituancy  regarding obvious   problems.

Central Daylight Time         As far as
bars go...  I am against alcohol!  When someone drinks and
drives it is like someone playing russian roullete with their own
lives and the lives of anyone on the road.  Alcohol is a
drug.  An addictive drug.  Yet it is legal.  I was
young and foolish at the time that I drank.  Alcohol causes
some people to black out and not know what they have done during
that time.  It is a big cause of the break up of
marriages.  Of families.  When a spouse chooses alcohol
over their family.  I feel alcohol should be illegal.  I
am more anti alcohol than anti smoking.  If someone doesn't
want to be where their is smoke then go to someplace that has a no
smoking section.  If someone doesn't want to be around alcohol
you have to stay inside you home because people drink and
drive.  I lost a brother n law who was on his way home from
college with his fiance' to tell the family he was getting
married.  On their way home a man who was under the influence
of alcohol ran into them.  He died instantly, his fiance' lived
in a coma for a few months and died.  They were both 21 years
old.  Just graduated from college and ready to start their
lives as husband and wife.  And one man took that away from
them.  One man took away a  brother , a son, a daughter, a
friend to so many.  There are deaths of families, children,
babies, husbands, wives, mothers, fathers , and friends, everyday
because alcohol is legal.   Yes ,
smoking is bad but alcohol is so much worse.  You can get away
from smoke you can't get away from alcohol.  God Bless
All!  Rid this great country of the deadly liquid , alcohol.

  Let's list just a few
things that Alcohol does to a person OR to someone that may be right
            next to them.

  * Drinking during pregnancy has been linked to
birth defects and is the leading known preventable cause of mental
retardation. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is characterized by a
cluster of congenital birth defects which include low birth weight,
physical deformities, neurological and other major organ disorders.
(this affects more than the person drinking, ya wanna talk about
            second hand smoke?)
  * Pregnant women who drink are twice as likely
as nondrinkers to have a growth-retarded infant weighing less than
            5.5 pounds.
  *
Alcohol use results in economic costs of more than $112 billion each
year, or nearly $400 for each person in the United
            States.
  * Nearly one-fourth of all persons admitted to
general hospitals have alcohol problems or are undiagnosed
alcoholics being treated for the consequences of their drinking. Up
to 25% of emergency room visits involve alcohol. In 1990, Federal
payments for alcohol-related health-care costs amounted to more than
            $21 billion.
  * In 1999, alcohol and other substance abuse
costs imposed $60.3 billion on Medicare and Medicaid, veterans, and
            other major health benefits.
  * In 2001, alcohol was
a factor in more than 40% of traffic fatalities

  * Approximately
35% of fatalities from falls and 43% from burns are
            alcohol-related
  * Forty-seven percent (47%) to 65% of adult
            drownings involve alcohol.
  * Up to 40% of
industrial fatalities and 47% of industrial injuries can be linked
            to alcohol consumption and alcoholism.
  * A 2000 study of
boating fatalities in four states found that 51% of the fatalities
involved a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of .04 or more. Thirty-one
percent (31%) had BACs over .10.
  * Alcohol is the
leading cause of death and injury (e.g., motor-vehicle crashes,
homicides, and suicides) among teenagers and young adults ages
            15-24.
*The estimated annual cost of alcohol-related
STDs in the United States is $556 million.
  Lets put the same
restrictions on alcohol to save our population that we do on
            tabacco!

  I have never drove

Money, Money , Money thats why!!! It is amazing

sell alcohol not cigarettes....amazing that they would put an

about alcohol. In fact alcohol isn't even under attack, so let's
            talk about that...
  Health Issues:
  A) Self Inflicted Illnesses 1) Tobacco 2)
Alcohol a) Tobacco causes Lung Cancer b) Alcohol destroys the liver
  B) Affecting Others 1) Tobacco 2)
Alcohol a) 2nd hand smoke may cause others
medical problems twenty years down the road b) Drinking and Driving can wipe out a family
right down the road fifteen minutes from a bar
  In an outdoor stadium
at a sporting event you can drink all you want up to a certain point
of the game, but you can't smoke a cigarette. At many restaraunts
you can order hard liquor and drink as much as you want, but you
can't smoke a cigarette. I don't see no anti drinking movements
happening, only anti smoking attacks. How about leveling the playing

  Oh to
non-smokers who drink wouldn't like the idea of their right to a
beer with their steak being taken away would they? Or God forbid if
you can't drink at a sporting event, but the hell with cigarette
smokers rights! Doesn't that pretty much sum up the truth behind all
            of this?
  Spare me
with the 2nd hand smoke BS argument too, because as already proven
above that is a hypocritical argument. How many of you drinkers
always has a designated driver? Sorry, but your drinking and driving
is far more deadly and harmful to others than second hand smoke.

alcoholism, suicide attempts which yes, is sometimes caused by
alcohol. Why in hell, when you're in a bar, would you want to go
outside and smoke a cigarette when some bars actually have a fee to
get in? Which means you'd have to pay to get in again. Bars are
social places. Personally, if a bar chose to ban smoking I don't
think many people would attend, everyone has a friend that smokes

  Alcohol kills many
more innocent people than smoking does.If i want to smoke, I am only harming myself(as long as i don't
expose anyone to my smoke) which i dont, but
Alcohol related deaths are much worse because it kills innocent
people. I have yet to hear of smoking
tobacco that has lead to any deaths, except for a 1 percent, that causes a fire from smoking. The
reason everyone is coming down on smokers is because there are alot
more Drinkers than smokers,98 percent of congress drinks,So they attack Smokers to draw attention away from
drinking! I will smoke any place i choose, but i choose to smoke only in my own home,I
think restaraunts and Bars should put in glass rooms with Hepa filters,So smokers can
smoke, otherwise, they should get rid of the Alcohol as well!! I am
sick of Government coming down on Smokers just to draw attention
away from all the deaths caused by Alcohol, not including liver
disease, and a list of diseases that Alcohol
is directly a known cause of.LAY OFF THE SMOKERS OR GET RID OF THE
            DRINKERS AS WELL!!!

  This is all a one
sided BS attack. Non-smokers can argue the health issues all they
want, but you don't hear them arguing those points about alcohol. In
fact alcohol isn't even under attack, so let's talk about that...
  Health Issues:
  A) Self Inflicted
            Illnesses 1) Tobacco 2) Alcohol a) Tobacco
causes Lung Cancer b) Alcohol destroys the
            liver
  B) Affecting
            Others 1) Tobacco 2)
Alcohol a) 2nd hand smoke may cause others
medical problems twenty years down the road b) Drinking and Driving can wipe out a family
right down the road fifteen minutes from a bar
  In an outdoor stadium
at a sporting event you can drink all you want up to a certain point
of the game, but you can't smoke a cigarette. At many restaraunts
you can order hard liquor and drink as much as you want, but you
can't smoke a cigarette. I don't see no anti drinking movements
happening, only anti smoking attacks. How about leveling the playing
            field?
  Oh to
non-smokers who drink wouldn't like the idea of their right to a
beer with their steak being taken away would they? Or God forbid if
you can't drink at a sporting event, but the hell with cigarette
smokers rights! Doesn't that pretty much sum up the truth behind all
            of this?
  Spare me
with the 2nd hand smoke BS argument too, because as already proven
above that is a hypocritical argument. How many of you drinkers
always has a designated driver? Sorry, but your drinking and driving
is far more deadly and harmful to others than second hand smoke.

  Both alcohol and
smoking kill people.. if a bar is going to ban smoking, might as
well ban alcohol too. Alcohol kills more people than smoking anyway,
you have to add up those in car accidents, alcoholism, suicide
attempts which yes, is sometimes caused by alcohol. Why in hell,
when you're in a bar, would you want to go outside and smoke a
cigarette when some bars actually have a fee to get in? Which means
you'd have to pay to get in again. Bars are social places.
Personally, if a bar chose to ban smoking I don't think many people
would attend, everyone has a friend that smokes and they aren't
going to want to go there. I think if a non-smoker has a problem
with it he or she should just shove it up their you know what,
because even when you step outside (for those non-smokers that have
a problem with this) their going to run into polution that could
possibly kill them also.. so, maybe we should just go back to
            cavemen time??

  This is freaking
ridiculous!!  If cigarettes are to be made illegal, then
alcohol should be illegal as well.  More people die from the
stupidity of drunkenness than from second hand smoke!!  Can
anyone name one documented case in which the cause of death was
second hand smoke???  You probably cannot because there is none
to document.  How many INNOCENT people die from a drunk
driver's poor judgement??? Thousands!  So, If the enviro-nazis
decide to make smoking illegal, then alcohol should be first.
Alcohol is the most addicting, life ruining drug out there besides
perhaps heroin.  Oh and by the way alcohol kills brain cells,
messes up your liver, stomach, and pancreas.  Americans are
soooo vastly stupid when it comes to things that should make common
sense.  I wish people in this hole in the earth would wake up
and get some brains before the whole country collapses.

happens is that because of the poison in your blood, the blood cells
stick together like sticky gobstopper sweets thus restricting the

  I believe you are
right about the alcohol.  I know it not only puts people on the
highways in danger but it also destroys most families.  I know
this for a certainty.  I wonder what will happen when they ban
alcohol just like they do smoking?  It needs to happen.
Being a drunk is more readily accepted where smoking is not.
Go to any bar around closing time and see who the alcohol is aimed
at.  Most of them are young people.  All alcoholic
commercials are aimed at the young people and show what a joyous
time these people have that drink.  What these commercials
don't show is the heartbreak of families that have to deal with the
            problem.  GET REAL
This new law is just another way to take away
the rights of all people.  When are people going to wake up and
see what is happening.  One day we won't have any rights at all
and the American people will have no one to blame but themselves

  OK, I agree that
restaurants should be non-smoking;  or at least clearly state
that, if a "Bar and Grill" type of establishment, smoking is allowed
            in certain sections....As an ex-smoker, I don't care to eat at a
restaurant that allows smoking....ON THE OTHER HAND:  ALCOHOL
RELATED ILLNESS HOSPITALIZE AND KILL THOUSANDS IF NOT MILLIONS OF
PEOPLE EACH YEAR! OK, we would NEVER think of banning booze....but
it is a CHOICE to order a drink, or to frequent establishments which
serve alcoholic beverages.  Hell, booze affects thousands of
unborn children, and millions of families suffer because of alcohol
related problems each year, but we dare not say that everyone who
CHOOSES to drink has a low IQ, is selfish, is a bad parent,

        I agree...and I

I think alcohol should be banned all together.  What the hell
good does it do.  I was the child of drinkers, the wife of
drinkers...and yes ocassionally I do drink..but I could live with

  it is  a proven
fact that alcohol has major affects on the lungs as bad as cigarette
smoke not to MENTION alcohol also creates tiny holes in your brain
tissue which is not reversable.alcohol also causes effects on your
judgment and people drinking also loose their inhibitions. does
smoking cause you to loose your judgment or inhibitions? do you hear of car crashes because of a smoker
that got out of hand? do you hear of people going to jail because
they lost their temper smoking? do your
            book-work.
